The alph male, the singer in this case, who controls the pit with his voice, seems to be the one they want to be close to. Whenever he was energized, they were as well. They seemed to feel that the more they moshed and the bigger the pit grew, the more likely they were to be noticed and acknowledged by the alpha-male.
